Crimes

Every line I rhyme
Feels like another crime
I’m held back by all the attacks
That aren’t even the facts

In truth, most people don’t care
Most don’t even know that I’m there
But behind the screen
I’m just one scared teen

I’m scared that people won’t like what I write
I’m scared that in my pain I won’t fight
I see people argue and call others names
They don’t realize that these aren’t games

That I’m not the only person that sits behind a screen
That there are millions of others that remain unseen
You can’t just forget that the names you see are real
That behind those names they can feel

And everyone says things that they regret
But those are things that others can’t forget
It sits in their mind, their heart
It rips them apart

Makes them feel betrayed
And afraid
People don’t know what their words can mean
To someone’s self-esteem

Even if you're afraid of the guilt
You need to fix the pain you’ve built
Because even the biggest of dams can overflow
If you don’t help these problems just go

Even now you sit behind a screen
To read this poem on some kind of machine
These things can be the biggest type of hate
Or something full of love that we can create

But to do that we have to know that wrong is okay
That you can’t be perfect with everything that you say
No matter how you live you’re bound to cause some pain
And it will live with you like some kind of stain

But that’s life
And although it can be sharp as a knife
It’s okay

Because we’ll try anyway

  1. Your "wrong is ok" is the most startling and interesting line to me. You have done A good job with your rhymes. I typically don't write rhyming poetry because I find it very difficult to end on a rhyme that doesn't give too much emphasis to the word. I would be really interested to see what this poem looks like if you did not feel the need to rhyme it. It might give you some really interesting ideas. Maybe experiment by putting some other characters in the poem and see how they respond to the narrator. You might surprise yourself!
